One of my favorite things about a beach vacation is watching the sunset and listening to the waves by the warmth of a campfire. We have bonfires on the beach whenever we can. Just north of Cannon Beach, Ecola State Park is a popular place for hiking, beautiful views of the coastline and perfect beaches.

The park runs along nine miles of the coastline. In the park, there are great places for a picnic, photography, and hiking. It is a small area along the coast but there is plenty of beautiful things to see. The best way to experience Hug Point is walking along the beach , admiring the burnt-colored cliffs. Crabbing on the Oregon Coast is another one of our favorite things to do in Cannon Beach. It was fun to be out on the water and try our hand at crabbing. We did this before we had kids and it would be a little more difficult now if we went with them. You will need a capable body to drive the boat and another to grab the trap and pull it up. We went at the end of August and caught enough crabs for dinner for a group of 15 people.

We fished for about six hours and came back with the limit for each person. This was our first time fishing out in the ocean and it was a lot of fun. This is a long time commitment so if you have quite a few days to spend in the area or you love fishing, this would be a fun option. It is about 25 minutes south of town and where we stayed on our west coast RV trip. The park is on the beach and we loved having the beach a few steps out of our motorhome door.

The park has two day-use areas, rolling dunes along the beach, a bike path along with opportunities for kayaking, fishing and clamming. Arcadia Beach is about a mile south of town and is a great place to spend the day at the beach. There are tidepool areas to the north and south and is a popular place for surfers. Seaside is bigger than Cannon Beach with lots of family-friendly activities, an outlet mall and a historic shipwreck left on the beach.

There are tons of adorable beachfront bungalows right on the beach! Imagine how relaxing it would be waking up to the waves here. This is when it is the warmest and most predictably dry.

However, if you keep an eye on the weather you can visit year-round. One of the coolest and most unique things about Cannon Beach is the reflection that Haystack Rock casts. To capture the reflection you have to get close to the water and shoot when the water is receding. We used our mm lens here and it was perfect. A zoom lens or lens compression is not needed to shoot Haystack Rock, but can come in handy if you want to shoot the northern coastline a little further out.

No, unfortunately drones are not allowed. There are signs at the beach entrance saying taking off, landing and flying are all forbidden. Yes, currently in June Cannon Beach is open as long as you practice social distancing on the beach.

In the town it is currently mandatory to practice social distancing and wear a mask. Restaurants and breweries are open at partial capacity. As of June 20th, Ecola State Park was still not open , though. Dogs are allowed on the beach as long as they are leashed or under voice command of their owner. There were tons of dogs there when we went and they were having so much fun!

Cannon Beach is just a short drive from Portland or Seattle and the town is located right off Hwy It takes about 3 hours and 45 minutes to get from Seattle to Cannon Beach.

There are a few driving routes from Seattle but we prefer the coastal route that cuts through Olympia to Hwy It only adds about 5 minutes and is so much prettier!
